Jeff, a recent graduate of Jones High School, didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. His cousin advised him to sign up for Mr. Parker’s major appliance repair program, so Jeff did.
During the first month of attending Mr. Parker’s program, Jeff started trying to get a job as a maintenance technician at a resort. The resort maintenance manager turned him away. Jeff continued to ask the resort for a job until the maintenance manager finally decided to give him a chance. Jeff did not accept no and pushed himself to be the best candidate for the job.
Jeff attended school from 7:45 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. and worked at the resort from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. He maintained this schedule for the entire school year.
Jeff did great on the job, applying what he learned in class from Mr. Parker and getting additional training from the resort. Jeff was a sponge for information and had a great work ethic. He became one of the best employees at the resort. Jeff was so good that the maintenance manager came to our school and asked the teacher if he had any more students like Jeff that he could hire!
Toward the end of Jeff’s time in the major appliance repair program, not only did the resort love the job that Jeff was doing, but Jeff was also attracting much attention from our industry partners. This attention affected the other students in the classroom. They saw how hard he worked and the attention he was getting, making them strive to be like him.
After a bidding war to see who would ultimately hire Jeff, Jeff left the major appliance repair program, making over $30 an hour.
Jeff’s story doesn’t end there. After working out in the field for a few months, Jeff decided to use his vacation time to return to school to sharpen his skills further.
Not every student will leave this program making $30 an hour, but Jeff’s story shows what’s possible if you work hard, have a great attitude, and focus on learning as much as possible from the instructor.
