CTE Student Spotlight: Jeremiah Gilyard (Surgical Tech)

Jeremiah Gilyard is a student in the Surgical Technology Program at OTC – Main Campus. Just a month from graduating from the program, he already has a job lined up at Orlando Regional Medical Center!

Jeremiah’s goal is to be a surgeon, and he knew the first step along that journey would be to become a surgical tech. As a surgical tech, he’ll be able to assist surgeons and work in his dream field. He searched for a surgical tech program for a year before coming to Orange Technical College.

Some of the practical skills that Jeremiah is grateful to have learned are aseptic technique (keeping everything in the surgery room sterile), patient care, anatomy, and instrumentation. One of the vital soft skills he learned in the program is communication and teamwork. He says these two qualities are important because everybody needs to be on the same page for the operation to go smoothly.

When asked if he would recommend this program to someone else, he said absolutely! Jeremiah shared that more so than any other school he found, what you learn in the Surgical Technology program at OTC translates directly into the field.

He said, “The teachers really want to help you, and it’s a great community here. I’ve never had teachers who actually wanted to see me succeed as much as my teachers do here. There are fewer roadblocks to learning here, so whatever you put in is what you will get out of your experience here.”

The entire OTC community is proud to see Jeremiah’s dedication to his studies pay off. Congrats Jeremiah!
