OTC Alumni: Thomas’ Story (Massage Therapy)

I am a spring 2020 graduate from the Massage Therapy course offered by the Orange Technical College – Avalon Campus. This 750 hour, highly technical course was taught by the extremely qualified instructor, Jonah Salomon, LMT. His presence in the classroom and clinical lab has made Orange Technical College the preferred destination to prepare for the Florida Board of Health Massage Therapy License. And I am one to know this first-hand.

I am retired Army, 20+ years total military service, earned my bachelor’s degree in social science (Summa Cum Laude), been a stage actor (10+ years), served hundreds of hours community service helping struggling English-learner and sub-standard reading students with their homework, in addition to coaching children and adults in reading aloud. I am merely saying that I recognize good teaching as it relates to effectively reaching a diversified audience. And the OTC – Avalon Campus assets, paired with the superior staff, prepared me for my life’s next journey

The course of instruction covers anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, ethics & law, health & safety, bookkeeping, facility planning, and of course, professionalism. Only someone with relevant experience and integrity would be competent enough to instill this essential knowledge and inspiration into their students. Orange Technical College currently has the absolute best for this purpose in Mr. Salomon.

As a result, four weeks into my course of study under Jonah Salomon, I was convinced he could equip me with the necessary knowledge and clinical experience to pass the MBLEx (board licensing exam) on the first attempt. I sat for the licensing exam less than one week after graduating and passed, and then received my Florida State massage license two, yes 2, days later. But this was only the beginning.

Having confidence that Mr. Salomon was teaching and demonstrating the most significant aspects of my new profession, I was motivated to open a massage clinic right here in the Avalon Park area of Orlando. My establishment features four therapy rooms, five massage tables, and a large lounge with six reclining massage chairs for performing various modalities of massage and reflexology.

I am proud to represent Orange Technical College (Avalon Campus) and hope Mr. Jonah Salomon continues in this vital academic position.
